I'd like to introduce the adventure bike that has recently captivated me: the Kona Sutra LTD.

The Sutra LTD is a highly distinctive model that combines elements of mountain bikes, road bikes, and gravel road bikes.

As a touring bike for traveling to various places, or as an off-road bike for traversing bumpy mountains, the more you examine its details, the more refined it appears. It's a model that allows you to enjoy the fundamentals of cycling fun, unconstrained by categories.

However, due to its unique nature (it's a niche bike), many aspects of the Sutra LTD are not widely known.

Therefore, this time, I'd like to compile information about the Sutra LTD here, as a "dissection manual" for the Kona Sutra LTD.

◆About the unique appeal of the Kona Sutra LTD

The Sutra LTD is not a mainstream bicycle, like a "standard" or "classic" model; rather, it's a bike best described by words like "unique," "eccentric," or "wild."

Furthermore, it doesn't prioritize race-oriented values like speed or lightness. Instead, it's a wild bike that embodies robustness, resilience, and the ability to ride through any terrain.

Bicycles come in various categories such as MTBs, road bikes, and touring bikes, but the Sutra LTD is a model that is very difficult to categorize.

It possesses the off-road capability of an MTB while employing drop handlebars, which are characteristic of road bikes.

The specifications of each frame part combine elements of both MTBs (tires, BB width, dropper post) and road bikes (drop handlebars, front and rear hubs, brake mounts). With tire clearance for 29x2.4 tires, it also stands apart from gravel road bikes.

If we had to categorize it, we could call it an "adventure bike."

◆What exactly is the KONA SUTRA LTD?

Kona is a brand that has infused its extensive experience and spirit, cultivated in the world of off-road cycling since its founding in 1988, into its products.

Among Kona's offerings, the Sutra is a long-selling touring bike model.

The Sutra lineup has evolved with the times, featuring models like the Sutra, Sutra LTD, and Sutra ULTD, each with different specifications.

The original Sutra was a traditional touring bike, well-suited for riding with front and rear racks and panniers.

The Sutra LTD emerged as a spin-off, designed as a bike with strong off-road characteristics, capable of accommodating thick tires around 29x2.0.

Further evolution led to enhanced off-road performance, compatibility with dropper seatposts and front suspension, and a match with current component standards, resulting in the "Sutra ULTD (the current Sutra LTD)."

While it's a bit confusing, starting in 2022, the Sutra ULTD was unified under the name LTD, and it has remained so to this day.

◆Main frame specifications

Chromoly steel frame and fork tubes.
Disc brake specific frame, flat mount brake compatible.
Brake rotors are compatible from 160mm. Complete bikes come equipped with 180mm front and rear brake rotors.
Maximum tire width is 29x2.4 inches front and rear. However, due to clearance with the seat tube, 2.25 inches is recommended for the rear.
Compatible with various carriers such as front, rear, and under-side carriers.
Center stand cannot be installed. (If I find a good one, I'll introduce it)
Downtube mounts for a frame bag are located on the underside of the top tube.
The head tube is EC34 at the top and EC44 at the bottom, with a tapered shape.
Seat tube inner diameter 31.8mm, outer diameter 35.0mm.
Front end 100x12mm, rear end 142x12mm, thru-axle type.
Bottom bracket is 73mm threaded type.
Designed for single front chainring only, confirmed up to a maximum of 38t.
Mudguards with a maximum width of 74mm can be installed on both front and rear.
Compatible with carbon forks around 430mm in length and gravel suspension forks.
