MTB wheelset with outstanding usability. MAVIC CROSSMAX XL

I’ve been using the MAVIC CROSSMAX XL for about two years now.

I've used it for everything from trail rides on my eMTB to downhill races.

I found it to be a very user-friendly wheel with few problems, so I'm introducing it now, albeit a bit late.

What makes it so easy to use?

The biggest advantage of the MAVIC CROSSMAX XL is its tapeless construction.

No rim tape is required.

Many of the problems encountered when using tubeless tires are caused by rim tape. I think about 80% of them involve rim tape. The remaining 20% are probably issues with the valve, the tire itself, tire-rim compatibility, or insufficient sealant.

Eliminating rim tape reduces the problems themselves, and makes it much easier to pinpoint the cause of a malfunction. This is truly helpful for mountain bikes, where tubeless is the norm.

It's no exaggeration to say that this alone makes these wheels worth choosing. Seriously.

How is it in actual use?

The rim is excellent. The benefit of not needing rim tape is truly significant.

Tire installation is not much different from a regular rim, but the big advantage is that you don't have to worry about damaging the rim tape when installing or removing tires, so you can use tire levers without concern. It also saves time and eliminates the need to be overly cautious.

Also, with some of the tires I used, the beads seated with just a floor pump. This gives peace of mind in case of trouble on the road.

Air leakage was also very minimal, and the air never completely leaked out, causing the beads to unseat, even when left alone. While tire compatibility certainly plays a role, the airtightness is exceptionally high.

The rolling resistance felt surprisingly light. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much in terms of rolling performance, but whether accelerating or coasting, it moved smoothly and felt very good.

Pros and Cons of MAVIC CROSSMAX XL

Cons
・Low engagement (24T, but upgradable to 40T with an option)
・Requires proprietary spokes

Even the cons are two sides of the same coin as the pros.
Regarding the number of engagement points, it's a matter of preference and riding style. Personally, I find more engagement points enjoyable, so I listed it as a con, but more isn't always better. There are also issues unique to high-engagement hubs, such as the suspension locking up more easily or unexpected acceleration. You can upgrade to 40T by installing the optional kit.

Regarding proprietary spokes, generic spokes cannot be substituted, so services may not be available outside of MAVIC dealers. The disadvantage is that you can't get service anywhere and anytime, but it comes with 2 spare spokes, and the left and right lengths are the same, so I think you can minimize trouble by having at least those ready.

Recommended for

This wheel is highly recommended for tubeless beginners and anyone who has struggled with tubeless setups. It can significantly reduce the stress associated with tubeless systems.

It's also a great upgrade from stock wheels on complete bikes.

What riding style is it suited for?

It's great for local trails, and downhill is also fine. Recommended for those who want to thoroughly enjoy descents.

I use it on my eMTB with no problems. I even won a DH race with it.
