For those considering MAVIC wheels

MAVIC is a wheel brand that was the first in the world to release factory-built wheels.

When you buy a road bike and consider changing the wheels, MAVIC is definitely one of the brands that comes to mind. Recently, more road bikes can accommodate wider tires, and more riders are opting for tubeless setups. MAVIC wheels are highly refined, and tubeless setup is easy. They are factory-built wheels that we can confidently recommend.

However, many people may not know which model is right for their specific use due to the variety of options available. This article will outline the general types of MAVIC wheels, and in the latter half, we will explain our popular Allroad wheels in both 700C and 650B sizes.

If you are considering factory-built wheels for your gravel bike or cyclocross bike, please use this as a reference.

MAVIC's factory-built wheels for gravel bikes and cyclocross bikes are roughly divided into three types: Cosmic, Ksyrium, and Allroad.

Cosmic Carbon deep-rim wheels

Rim inner width: 19mm
Recommended tire size: 2532mm
Usage: Road bikes

Ksyrium Aluminum rim wheels

Rim inner width: 19mm
Recommended tire size: 2532mm
Usage: Road bikes

Allroad  Carbon and aluminum rim wheels that can accommodate wider tires

700C Rim inner width: 2223mm
700C Recommended tire size: 2864mm(1.1”~2.5”)
650B Rim inner width: 25mm
650B Recommended tire size: 2864mm(1.1”~2.5”)
Usage: Gravel・Cyclocross

Cosmic and Ksyrium are road bike wheels that can accommodate tires with widths of 2532mm. They are also recommended when customizing a gravel or cyclocross bike to ride like a road bike.
Specifically, for Panasonic's endurance road bikes FRTD03 and ORCD05/FRCD05, these wheels would be a good choice.

Allroad wheels can accommodate tires from 28 to 64mm, making them suitable for what are known as gravel and cyclocross bikes. The rim width is 4mm wider than Cosmic/Ksyrium, allowing for fatter tires. While it's possible to mount wider tires on narrow rims like Cosmic/Ksyrium, it won't fully bring out the intended ride comfort and performance.

Here are some specific bike models that can be equipped with Allroad wheels:

Specialized CRUX, DIVERGE
TREK Boone, Checkpoint
GIANT TCX, REVOLT
Panasonic FCXTD01, FCXCD01
SURLY Midnight Special
Allcity Zig Zag

If you're using tires wider than 28C, Allroad wheels are recommended.

Allroad wheels come in two sizes: 700C and 650B. Frames that can accommodate 700x33C tires can also fit 650Bx47C tires by "down-sizing" the wheel diameter. Conversely, complete bikes with 650B tires can be converted to 700C. The characteristics and ride feel of each will be introduced in a separate article.

Next, we will explain the differences between the high-end and standard models of Allroad wheels.

Both generally feature front and rear thru-axles, with the front being 12mm x 100mm and the rear 12mm x 142mm.

The high-end Allroad SL (700C650B) is an update of the previous Elite model, now eliminating the need for rim tape. The top-tier Allroad Pro was discontinued in 2021, making the Allroad SL currently the highest-end aluminum rim model.

With steel spokes, it offers excellent shock absorption and a comfortable ride, making it recommended for long rides.

Rim tape is not required, making tubeless tire changes easy. Among cyclocross/gravel aluminum rim wheels, it's lightweight and offers the best cost performance.

By attaching a QR adapter (sold separately), it can be mounted on cyclocross or gravel bikes with QR disc brakes.

For instructions on how to install the QR adapter, please watch this video. The explanation begins around 3:00 in the video.

How about it as the first upgrade for your complete bike?

Allroad 700SL  Price: 104,500 yen (tax included)
Front/Rear Set Weight: 1,590g Tubeless valves included

Allroad 650SL  Price: 104,500 yen (tax included)
Front/Rear Set Weight: 1,550g Tubeless valves included

The standard Allroad model is our most popular wheel. Since the price is in the 40,000 yen range, it can help keep costs down when building a custom bike from the frame.

The 650B model was launched in 2022.No other 650B wheel in this price range can compare.
When building a bike from the frame, why not consider these wheels?

Allroad 700 Price: 44,000 yen (tax included)
