Why are SPD clipless pedals recommended for road bikes?

SPD-SL is the common type of clipless pedal system for road bikes. The cleats and heel of these specialized shoes tend to wear out quickly, don't they?

I've been spending more time riding my road bike lately, and consequently more time in my dedicated cycling shoes, so the cleats and heels are pretty worn out.

When cleats are worn to this extent, it results in a loss of power and makes it very dangerous to clip in and out. If yours are similar, we recommend replacing your cleats immediately.

Recently, it has become common for road bike riders to wear SPD shoes for exploring their cycling destinations or for bike travel.

MTB and gravel SPD shoes have cleats and heels that are less prone to wear, making them more cost-effective than road-specific shoes.

Recent gravel clipless shoes include models with durable rubber, as well as models with excellent power transfer, such as the carbon sole of the GIRO VR90 and the carbon composite sole of the GIRO SECTOR.

Although the pedaling power is slightly less compared to SPD-SL, if you're not racing but just enjoying your ride, they can be used for hill climbs without any problems.
