What I did to prepare my cross bike for a long ride
My destination was a bakery about 90km from Hiroshima City.
My friend Kubo from our sister shop "popgrumpy" talked me into doing a long ride to a bakery about 90km away from Hiroshima City.
However, there was one "restriction" for this ride.
That is—
"I had to ride a tokyobike SPORT 9s."
Tokyobike is known as a cross bike that zips through the city.
It's not designed for long-distance riding.
So, I'd like to share the modifications I made to challenge a 100km, 1000m elevation gain (it ended up being 100km because I took a wrong turn along the way) ride on such a tokyobike!
Bike Customization
① Pedal Replacement

Stock → MKS LAMBDA
By using wider pedals, you can efficiently convert pedaling power into propulsion. This is highly recommended!
② Handlebar Replacement

Stock → FAIRWEATHER B903 Bullmoose Bar
The stock handlebars were narrow and cramped, so I switched to wider handlebars with a moderate back sweep.
This allowed for a more comfortable riding posture.
③ Saddle Replacement

Stock → BROOKS FLYER
Saddle pain is the enemy on long rides. BROOKS leather saddles are initially stiff, but they conform to your shape with use.
As a result, the comfort is dramatically different. The saddle might be the most important part.
Accessories (for summer long rides)
● Hydration
-
Full bottle cage setup
-
Nalgene 1L bottle carried as an emergency (ultimately used for cooling down, not drinking)

-
Added a stem bag to store an insulated bottle

● Gear Storage
Frame Bag ( FAIRWEATHER frame bag SP M size):

-
Puncture repair kit
-
Multi-tool
-
Spare tube
-
Portable pump, etc.
Saddle Bag (Swift Industries Catalyst):

-
DSLR camera
-
Action camera
-
Energy gels/snacks
-
Cooling sheets, etc.
I like that the Catalyst has a suspended structure for luggage, so I feel safe putting delicate equipment in it.
After the ride...
Despite the 100km and 1000m elevation gain, I made good time and reached my destination in about 7 hours (including breaks).
It was good that I rode during the cool early morning hours
and that I didn't push myself too hard, taking breaks and riding at a relaxed pace.
Summary: Even with a cross bike, you can achieve a long ride if you try!
Honestly, it's not easy to attempt a 100km, 1000m elevation gain ride on a city bike like a tokyobike.
However, if you thoroughly customize the pedals, handlebars, and saddle, and make sure you're prepared with water and gear—
You can definitely complete the ride if you put in the effort.
It's not easy, but it's not impossible.
That's why the sense of accomplishment after finishing is particularly sweet.
I encourage you to take the first step and give it a try.
I'm sure it will expand your possibilities.
