What's the difference between KONA's [ROVE ST] and [ROVE ST DL]?

Recently, we had a customer inquiry about the ROVE ST.

Specifically, the question was: what's the difference between the 【ROVE ST】 and the 【ROVE ST DL】?

While the ROVE ST and ROVE ST DL share the same frameset, the components of the complete bikes vary depending on their intended use.

In this blog post, we'll compare these two models, both of which are in stock at Grumpy.

 

First, the frame colors differ between the ROVE ST and ROVE ST DL.

Frame color significantly changes the bike's appearance. While Grumpy can do custom paint jobs, it's always best to choose a color you love from the start!

Since the frame specifications are the same, feel free to choose your preferred color.

 

◆About Components

The shifting components are completely different between the ROVE ST and ROVE ST DL.

 

【ROVE ST】

Features Shimano Sora grade, with a double front chainring.

A double front chainring allows for significant gear changes, which is recommended for sudden climbs.

It also provides lighter gear ratios, useful for carrying heavy loads during bikepacking trips.

The rear sprocket is smaller, resulting in smaller tooth count differences during shifting, which is an advantage as it reduces shifting shock.

Chainring teeth are 50/34t.

【ROVE ST DL】

Comes with SRAM Rival. Features a single front chainring.

A single front chainring has a simpler crank structure, making it easier to clean and maintain.

To compensate for having only one front chainring while still being able to handle various inclines, the rear sprocket is larger.

The chainring has 40 teeth.

Both models offer gear ratios sufficient for city riding, touring, and adventure rides, so there isn't a significant difference in what they can or cannot do, and both are easy to use.

However, the choice between a single or double front chainring will affect appearance and ease of maintenance.

Additionally, due to the number of teeth on the front gear, the ROVE ST is better for those who want to ride fast, while the ROVE ST DL is more suitable for those who want to enjoy leisurely cycling.

 

◆About Brakes

The brakes are also completely different between the 【ROVE ST】 and the 【ROVE ST DL】.

【ROVE ST】

Equipped with Tektro MDC550 brake calipers.

These are mechanical (cable-actuated) brakes, making them easy for self-maintenance and adjustment.

While the braking power is sufficient for city riding and light cycling, if you plan on bikepacking with heavy loads or gravel riding, upgrading to brakes with stronger stopping power might be a good idea.

【ROVE ST DL】

Equipped with TRP HDC711C brakes.

These are often called hybrid brakes, combining features of both hydraulic and mechanical brakes.

Since braking is initiated by pulling a brake cable, mechanical-type brake levers can be used. However, only the internal mechanism of the brake itself is hydraulic, providing strong braking power similar to full hydraulic brakes.

 

 

◆About Tires

Both models are equipped with Maxxis Rambler tires, size 650x47c. While they are the same size and model name, their specifications differ slightly.

【ROVE ST】

Not tubeless compatible. If you plan to run tubeless, you will need to purchase separate tubeless-ready tires.

【ROVE ST DL】

Tubeless-ready tires. Can be run with tubes or tubeless.

  

 ◆About Complete Bike Pricing

【ROVE ST Complete Bike】 ¥182,600

【ROVE ST DL Complete Bike】 ¥248,600

The price difference is ¥66,000.

If you want to keep costs down initially and gradually upgrade, the ROVE ST is a good choice.

For those who want a solid ride from the start, the ROVE ST DL is recommended.

 

However, the KONA ROVE ST series frames are very robust, so rather than immediately customizing it to your personal specifications, it's better to gradually build it up to your ideal bike over time.

First, ride it, then replace parts that you're curious about, or customize it when it's time to replace worn-out parts. This way, you'll feel the difference in the parts and enjoy cycling even more. 

 

Both the ROVE ST and ROVE ST DL are highly recommended as a first bike. Don't hesitate!
