Why use a power meter?

Do you like video games? I love them. I'm especially drawn to games where you level up and get stronger, like role-playing games, so I tend to overdo it, which is why I've sealed them away for now.

Well, there's actually a bicycle part that offers the same kind of leveling-up fun as a video game. It's called a "power meter."

Some of Grumpy's staff and customers have rational reasons for installing a power meter, such as "to win races!", "to improve my ranking!", or "to be more efficient!".

However, it's not just that. More and more people are starting to enjoy it in a healthy, game-like way, saying things like, "The numbers that come out while I'm riding are fun, like a game!" or "I can see myself getting stronger!".

As you ride more and accumulate data, it not only shows you how much your power has increased, but it also serves as a benchmark for how much further you can ride, or when you want to ride with cycling buddies who have a similar level of fitness.

So, what exactly is a power meter? It's an item that measures how much force (power) a rider is exerting when pedaling. It measures power in watts (W) and is extremely useful for training and racing.

It's especially recommended for those who cycle for health and exercise, not just racing, as it clearly shows how much you're improving.

Think of it like a "scale" or "blood pressure monitor" for measuring your daily health. It's easy to understand.

This time, I'd like to briefly introduce the different types of power meters.

 

 

⚫︎Crank-based power meters

This type has sensors built into the crank arm or spider (the base of the chainring).

Power meters from Shimano and Magene are crank-based.

Their characteristic is high accuracy, as the sensors are directly attached to the crank, resulting in minimal power transmission loss.

Also, since the sensors are integrated into the crank, they are more resistant to impact and dirt than pedal-based types.

A good point is that you can also use flat pedals!

However, if you have multiple bikes, it takes a considerable amount of time to remount this power meter. Therefore, it's recommended for those who want to use it on a single bike.

 

 

⚫︎Pedal-based power meters

This type has sensors built into the pedals and directly measures the force applied to the pedals.

Favero Assioma and Garmin are examples of pedal-based power meters.

Their characteristic is that they are easy to install, just like regular pedals, so you can use them on multiple bikes.

Another good point is that they don't depend on crank or frame specifications, so they can be installed on most bicycles!

Models that measure each pedal independently can help you improve your pedaling efficiency and form in more detail.

 

Cycling while feeling your own progress like a game – that's another way to enjoy cycling!

Once you understand your own power using a power meter, you can enjoy the same place and the same bike in a different way!
