From On-Road to Off-Road: Gravel Bikes for Diverse Riding
Last year, I got a Cannondale Topstone for long rides and to get in shape.
There were several reasons why I chose a gravel bike over a road bike, but it all started with a gravel bike I borrowed as a test ride.
I was able to ride my usual trails, and despite it being several years since I'd done a long ride of about 100km, I completed it effortlessly. That's when I realized how much fun I could have with just one bike.
What I realized about gravel bikes after starting to ride one is their appeal: they're fast like road bikes on paved roads, but you can also enjoy off-road riding. You can enjoy both on-road and off-road right from your doorstep. Plus, you can easily cover distances that you might hesitate to tackle with a mountain bike. It has changed the way I ride and play.
I also started regular morning rides, primarily using it on paved roads. However, as I got more accustomed to it and gained confidence in riding almost anywhere, I couldn't suppress my mountain biker instincts. The desire to cover more distance while also playing in the dirt grew stronger.
So, in 2024, I plan to enjoy my gravel bike even more as a gravel bike.
Immediately, on a recent morning ride, I challenged myself to a route that included dirt sections.
It was almost entirely on-road, with a 9:1 road to off-road ratio, but even so, the dirt sections made me grin non-stop, making it a highly satisfying ride.
Going forward, I'd like to increase the off-road portion to 20% or 30%. I'll also be exploring new routes.

I've been riding the Cannondale Topstone Carbon for about six months now, and I'm very happy with it as it fits me perfectly.
While relatively affordable, the frame is light, and thanks to the Kingpin suspension, the ride comfort is superb. Most importantly, it has excellent traction and is less prone to slipping in corners, on slippery surfaces, or on steep, rough climbs.
The tires are currently 35c. For me, this size strikes the optimal balance between light handling when climbing and starting, and a sense of security and comfort.
Adding a dropper post has significantly improved handling and confidence off-road. It's a must-have if you're riding on dirt.
If I were to do more off-road riding, I think a model with a Lefty front suspension would make riding even easier and more enjoyable.

I also think the Santa Cruz Stigmata, which was my initial inspiration for getting a gravel bike, is a good option.
Gravel bikes, combining the speed of road bikes with the fun of off-road riding, seem to offer a new way to enjoy cycling.
